With the aim of facing the problem of the lack of official documentation among the inhabitants of Peru, the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) has started a significant campaign. The main purpose of this action is to ensure that each citizen has their National Identity Document (DNI).

This measure, free of charge, will cover the entire national territory, seeking to speed up and simplify the registration process of new Peruvian citizens from their birth.

Firstly, the initiative aimed at facilitating obtaining a free DNI will benefit all newborns and children under one year of age in 25 regions of the country who are registered in the Auxiliary Registry Offices (ORA) located in hospitals attached to the Ministry of Health. (Minsa) and the Social Health Security (EsSalud).

This provision will only apply if the birth registration is carried out in one of the Reniec service offices.

Likewise, Reniec has established that certain vulnerable groups in the country will have the right to receive the electronic National Identity Document (DNI) for free.

This service will be extended to citizens who are in conditions of poverty or extreme poverty, members of native communities of the Valley of the Apurímac, Ene and Mantaro Rivers (Vraem), as well as older adults.

Likewise, it includes people who are experiencing medical emergencies or who are admitted to hospitals, victims of natural disasters such as fires or torrential rains, and minors who are in a state of abandonment.

Under these conditions, to access the free electronic DNI, citizens of legal age must present their birth certificate during the campaigns organized for this purpose.

On the other hand, in the case of minors, it is the responsibility of the parents or legal guardians to previously manage the birth certificate before processing the document.

Currently Reniec has 98.7% of the population correctly documented. Photo: Reniec

Yes. Reniec has confirmed that the issuance of electronic National Identity Documents (DNI) will be provided, including for minors.

As is known, the arrival of the electronic DNI represents a step forward in the modernization of identification and civil procedures, since it will allow greater security and protection of identity from an early age. In addition, it prepares young people for a transition towards the digital responsibilities of adulthood.

This new document incorporates a digital certificate that, although it is an integral part of the DNI electronic chip, can only be used when the holder reaches the age of majority.

By providing the electronic DNI for free, people in vulnerable situations are given the opportunity to access a variety of services and administrative procedures more efficiently. (Andean)

Reniec encourages citizens to opt for digital channels to obtain or renew the National Identity Document (DNI), whether in its conventional or electronic format.

This initiative seeks to decongest physical offices and facilitate procedures for users. Those interested can access the variety of online services by entering the website www.reniec.gob.pe.

Additional reminder. The entity reminds that the estimated time for the delivery of documents now varies between one week and 10 days. Applicants must coordinate the specific date to collect their documents through the institution’s official portal:
