Renovation and Maintenance Contracts for Egyptian Railway Authority Boosted by Czech Group Skoda: A Major Step Towards Egypt’s Ambition to Lead African Railway Manufacturing

The Egyptian Railway Authority and the Czech group Skoda have signed two contracts worth 1 billion euros for the renovation and maintenance for 15 years of 280 locomotives.

These contracts cover, among other things, the refurbishment of “driving cabs, drive and air supply, control and management systems, train braking systems, etc.”. This should extend the life of the locomotives by 15 to 20 years. This partnership also includes skills transfer clauses under which the Czech group (known more for its automotive branch) will build maintenance and overhaul units on site. This responds to Cairo’s ambition to become one of the leading railway rolling stock manufacturers in Africa.

For the Czech equipment manufacturer, this major contract with Egypt will serve as a showcase and launching pad for the conquest of other African markets. Before Egypt, the Czech industrialist had won a subcontract with Hyundai Rotem as part of an initial contract to supply 17 electric locomotives to Tanzania.
