Vehicular traffic has resumed at the Shir Pass in Asir in Saudi Arabia. It was opened for traffic following completion of repair and renovation works. A 34-km stretch of Aqaba Shir Pass in Asir province has now been repaired. Of this, 14 km is a pass and 20 km is a single road. Dividers have been installed along a length of 220 meters.

7,000 m long expansion joints were installed inside the tunnels. Modern lighting systems have also been installed to facilitate traffic. Reflectors have been placed on the walls inside the tunnels for a length of 14 km and reflector ground marks along the road for a length of 34 km. Also around 800 warning boards have been installed.

Asir Provincial Development Authority and Road Authority stated that the development activities are part of increasing traffic safety through this route. Development work has been going on here for the past four months. The biggest renovation and development work in 40 years has just been completed. Further work on the project will be completed in the coming years. It was here that the bus carrying the Umrah pilgrim group that left for Makkah overturned and caught fire in the last Ramadan. In this accident, 21 people died and 29 people, including Indians, were injured.
