Foreign cars have many advantages for young drivers.
Shortly before Nahel M. during a chase was killed by a police officer in Nanterre, he was traveling with his colleague Fouad (name changed) in a Mercedes A45 AMG registered in Poland. Polish car rental companies are at young people from French working-class districts – some minors and without a driver’s license – particularly popular. The reason: the prices are unbeatable.
An investigation by “Le Figaro” revealed that the Mercedes, which can accelerate to 100 km/h in just four seconds, was rented in Nanterre the day before the crime and lent to several young people from the neighborhood before it fell into the hands of came near.
According to a police source, the phenomenon is well known to the authorities: since 2021, they have been pointing out the cheap sublease of luxury cars imported from Eastern European countries, especially Poland.
Renting a luxury car is often even free
As “Le Parisien” reports, renting a Mercedes AMG Cabrio costs around 1,500 euros a month. It is not uncommon for the rented cars to be subleased afterwards. An anonymous witness tells of his own experience: “I rent out my Mercedes AMG, sometimes at the weekend, for events.” This is good business for the witness: “If the car is used to shoot rap videos and also for a wedding, it happens that I get the 1,500 euros invested back.”
But it is not only worth renting foreign cars for financial reasons: the drivers feel untouchable because the car belongs to a company in Poland. So if they are flashed, they don’t have to worry about the buses, writes “Le Figaro”.
In France, drivers usually have twelve points on their driving licence. The total number decreases after a serious violation of the road traffic regulations. Renting a car from abroad is therefore an advantage for young French people: with a Polish license plate there is little risk of losing points, even if a traffic fine follows.
Where is the business for Polish car rental companies?
But the business must also be right somewhere for the car rental companies. And it does, as a Polish private detective told Le Figaro. Behind the business is a Polish car dealership ring that is looking for men in Poland around 30 with no criminal record and good credit. Customers rent one or more sports cars in their name and often receive more than they pay for the rental.
Then the cars are rented to a criminal network in Poland, which in turn arranges for the transport and another rental in France. Customers in Poland only find out about this when a French prosecutor contacts them because the car has been arrested and proceedings have been initiated.
