Reopening of Canal Condé-Pommeroeul: Promoting Sustainable and Efficient River Transport

The reopening of this canal allows boats up to 3,000 tonnes to save half a day of navigation. A 3000 ton boat means 150 trucks could be avoided. The objective of this reopening is also to encourage companies to move towards river transport, a “sustainable ecological transition issue” announces Philippe Henry, Walloon minister.

He adds : “It is very important for Wallonia to be on the map of the European river network. This is a huge economic issue. And it is also an ecological issue, companies will have to decarbonize their transport and their activities in the coming years. We must therefore give them the means to do so.“.

Depending on the journeys, the river transport of a ton of goods over a kilometer emits 2 to 5 times less greenhouse gases and almost 2 times fewer fine particles than road transport.

The Condé-Pommeroeul canal constitutes one of the three outlets of the Seine-Escaut corridor towards the large river networks of Northern Europe, with the adjoining Lys canal, and the Dunkirk-Escaut link. It establishes a direct river connection between the large French and Belgian canals, notably the Scheldt, the canal which connects Charleroi, Brussels, Antwerp to the north-east and the Meuse to the east.
