Another Day, Another Threat: GOP Rep. Mace “Physically Assaulted” on Capitol Grounds

Republican Rep. Nancy Mace said she was “physically accosted” on Capitol Hill Tuesday, just the latest incident in a series of recent threats against the South Carolina representative.

“I was physically accosted tonight on Capitol grounds over my fight to protect women. Capitol police have arrested him. All the violence and threats keep proving our point. Women deserve to be safe. Your threats will not stop my fight for women!” Mace wrote on social media following the incident.

She shared no further details about the incident or the suspect arrested.

Later, Mace posted an update, assuring her followers that her injuries weren’t serious: “One new brace for my wrist and some ice for my arm and it’ll heal just fine.”

Capitol Police and the Investigation

Capitol Police confirmed they have indeed arrested a suspect in connection with the altercation. The incident took place in the Rayburn Office Building sometime after six o’clock in the evening.

“Officers and agents with the Threat Assessment Section tracked down and arrested a suspect, charging them with assaulting a government official,” the police confirmed in a statement earlier this evening.

South Carolina officials have yet to identify the individual arrested nor details regarding their motive.

A Fight Over Transgender Rights and Bathroom Access

Mace has found herself at the center of controversy lately, especially regarding her stance on transgender rights. Last month,

Mace made headlines when she introduced a resolution to ban transgender women from using women’s restrooms at the Capitol and later filed legislation regarding similar restrictions for all federal buildings and federally funded schools.

The moves came after the election of Democratic Rep.-elect Sarah McBride of Delaware, who will be the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress.

“My office has botched the basic premise of the Resolution to protect women and girls’ spaces,” Mace stated in response to criticism of her proposing existing legislation.

Mace has often said she’s looking for ways to demonstrate the GOP is “pro-women.”

We reached out to Mace’s office for additional details about the incident and will provide an update as information becomes available.
