Reportable Infectious Diseases in Germany: The Infection Protection Act Explained

2023-09-11 20:01:28

The Infection Protection Act lists which infectious diseases are considered to be reportable. The infectious diseases such as rubella, chickenpox and measles, which are often referred to as childhood diseases, are also on the list, as are the diseases rabies, plague and anthrax, which are almost no longer found in Europe. The most recent case of anthrax in Germany occurred in 2009 in a drug addict. Germany has been considered rabies-free since 2008. The Infection Protection Act serves to prevent illnesses. The list therefore primarily includes diseases that can spread particularly quickly in population groups due to their high infection rate. So far this year, the Baden-Württemberg State Health Office has registered three cases of measles, 25 cases of mumps and 2,142 cases of chickenpox as well as not a single case of rubella. There is a sharp increase in chickenpox. There were 1,155 registered cases of chickenpox in Baden-Württemberg in 2022 in the period from January to mid-September. So far this year, the state health department has registered 26 cases of meningococci; in the same period in 2022 there were only five cases.
