According to media reports, a few days ago Ukraine attacked the military part of an airport in the Russian border region of Kursk with a new type of drone. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy estimated the number of fighter jets his country would need to further push back the Russian occupiers. According to this, around 100 more combat aircraft are needed in addition to the commitments that have already been made.

A total of 16 missiles made of cardboard, which are said to be difficult to locate for air defense radars, were used last Sunday night, Ukrainian media reported on Thursday, citing sources at the SBU secret service. Five Russian fighter jets and several air defense systems are said to have been damaged in Kursk. This could not initially be checked independently.

Russian authorities had previously confirmed anti-aircraft fire on enemy drones, but did not provide any information on damage to aircraft or other military equipment. Satellite images from Monday also showed no clearly recognizable destruction.

In an interview published by Portuguese public television, Zelenskyy spoke about the number of fighter jets needed. “All in all, we need about 160 combat aircraft for a powerful air force,” said the Ukrainian president. This is intended to deprive Russia of the possibility of dominating Ukrainian airspace. So far, Kiev has received commitments for “50 or 60” F-16 fighter jets.

In his evening video speech, Zelenskyy also praised the signing of a joint arms production contract with Britain’s largest defense company, BAE. “Our goal is to produce the most useful defense weapons in Ukraine. And that will happen,” he said.

According to EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell, the foreign ministers of the EU countries support plans to expand the European training mission for the Ukrainian armed forces. Ministers backed his proposal to set a new target of training 40,000 soldiers, Borrell said after EU consultations in Toledo, Spain. The currently valid target of 30,000 trained Ukrainian soldiers by the end of the year will be reached by the end of October, according to information on Wednesday.

The new school year begins this Friday in both Russia and the attacked Ukraine. In Ukraine, many schoolchildren are still dependent on distance learning in the face of Russian shelling.
