WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson said again on Wednesday that there were no urgent plans to allow the House to vote on a $95 billion international security aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.
“The Senate will not force us to take action,” Johnson said at House leaders’ weekly news conference.
He reiterated his insistence that any package of international military and humanitarian aid must include security measures on the US border with Mexico.
The Senate passed the security bill without provisions related to the border on Tuesday after Republicans blocked a version of the bill, after months of bipartisan negotiations, that included the largest comprehensive reform of US immigration policy in decades.
The aid package received the support of 70 members, including 22 Republicans, in the Senate, which Democrats control by a narrow margin. In order to become law, it must also be passed by the House of Representatives, where Johnson’s Republicans hold a slight majority and thus have complete control over what is put to a vote.
“We will continue to demand that we must take care of our own business first before we take care of global issues,” Johnson said, referring to the border measures.
