Rescue workers among the victims: many dead in accidents in Turkey

At least 35 people have been killed in several serious accidents in Turkey. At the scene of an accident, a bus crashed into rescue workers. In another accident, a truck drove into a crowd.

At least 35 people have been killed in serious accidents in Turkey. At least 16 people were killed and 22 injured in a multi-vehicle accident in Gaziantep province. Provincial governor Davut Gül said the dead included firefighters, medical workers and two journalists.

The rescue workers and apparently also the journalists wanted to help in an accident when an approaching bus overturned and slipped into an ambulance and a broadcast van.

The accident happened on the highway between Gaziantep and Nizip in southern Turkey. TV images showed the bus lying on its side, a badly damaged ambulance and various pieces of debris.

Truck races in crowd

Hours later, a truck driver lost control of his truck and crashed into a crowd in Mardin, also in southern Turkey near the border with Syria. 19 people were killed and 29 others injured, said Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca.

According to the government, around 5,400 people died in Turkey last year.
