Weeks after the city of Severo Donetsk in Ukraine’s Luhansk region was bombarded by Russian artillery shells, the mayor announced on Saturday that the city had been “fully occupied” by Russian forces. The Ukrainian army said the day before that it would withdraw from the city and instead defend it in the twin cities of Lisichansk on the highlands on the opposite bank. After Russia won Severo Donetsk, it said it had taken control of most of the Luhansk region, allowing the Russian army to further advance to the wider Donbas region and move towards President Vladimir Putin’s goal of annexing Udong. Pro-Russian forces say they have evacuated more than 800 civilians from the Azot chemical plant in the city to areas under Russian control. At the same time, the Russian army fired 48 cruise missiles across Ukraine.
