Resolving Street Name Anomalies in Jumet: Bringing Order to the District for Public Safety

For a year and a half, the PS adviser Philippe Hembise went on a “voting strike” at the municipal council. Each time a change of street name was submitted for the assembly’s approval (to settle an odonymic duplication within the entity), he abstained. It was for him the way to draw attention to an aberrant situation in his district, in Jumet, on the edge of Roux, where the same street bore different names on one side and the other, with a chronological numbering of mixed even and odd numbers. So we were on rue de Monceau, on the right. And rue des Chèvres, on the left. “It was still not too bad if a pizza delivery boy brought the cold calzones following looking for fifteen minutes for the right address and ringing several other doors.reports Philippe Hembise. But it posed real public safety concerns in the event of a medical emergency.”

The anomaly was therefore brought to the attention of the college under the previous term of office. Françoise Daspremont first, then Anne-Marie Boeckaert in charge of Civil Status were seized of the file. The latter arrived at the end of 2018 in the hands of their successor Mahmut Dogru who set out to resolve the anomaly: the choice of the unique name of rue des Chèvres for the doubly named was unanimously validated by the last Council. A decision welcomed by the striker agent who broke his abstinence. A solution which aroused an enthusiastic reception in the district where the alderman went to announce it. A petition had been launchedrecalls Philippe Hembise. Many letters had been addressed to the administration of Citizenship. This fostered rapprochements, social ties were forged. For the first time, a neighbors party was even organised.”

The case therefore finally finds its “happy ending”, the numbers of the houses will be modified, even on one side and odd on the other, to get out of the topographical disorder. The finicky ones will judge that the solution is not yet ideal, because an error remains possible if the search is carried out from the postal code or the former municipality. But forty-five years following the mergers, it is time to say that Jumet, Roux and the thirteen other former localities that have constituted the entity since 1978 must give way to Charleroi.
