It is becoming customary to notify, week by week, new news about cuts within the video game industry. An economic crisis that affects both small studios and large companies. In this case, Electronic Arts announced the dismissal of 670 workers within the Respawn Entertainment team related to Apex Legends, the battle royale that recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.

An announcement that is accompanied by the information that EA provided at the end of February, where it shared the plan to reduce 5% of its staff. Part of this reorganization took its toll on Respawn’s new first-person Star Wars project, which was just beginning development. In turn, Ridgeline Games is another of the studios that also closes its doors due to the measure.

As we anticipated a week ago, Andrew Wilson, CEO of Electronic Arts, emphasized Apex Legends’ quest to “expand beyond the traditional battle royale universe.” In this internal reform, the company plans to focus on games from the Star Wars Jedi license, while Respawn will look for a way to transcend with its own franchises, beyond the classic free-for-all mode.

A complicated week for Apex, since, in addition to the conflict with cuts and restructuring, they also suffered an attack on their cybersecurity: two professional players were hacked while playing the fourth game of Apex Legends Global Series, the official competition of the license.
