The restaurant Le Maizerets, located in the Limoilou sector, announced the temporary closure of its business Tuesday morning, on its website.

The well-known establishment in Quebec City specialized in pizzas.

For almost 38 years, the slogan of Maizerets, located at 2006, chemin de la Canardière, has reminded us that it serves “the best pizza west of Rome”. The famous lobster pizza ad has also left its mark on many minds over the years.

Moreover, the Western (garnished with bacon and onion) referred to the old Western Pizza, opened in the same location between 1967 and 1986.

After 28 years at the head of the establishment, chef-owner Sébastien Leblond did not return the call from Journal. The latter, however, confided in his friend and ex-host Gilles Parent in a podcast lasting almost an hour.

Tramway

The owner says he is putting “employees temporarily out of work and permanently closing the restaurant while we wait to see if anyone can take over operations.”

The effects of the pandemic, as well as the plans for the future tramway, have also shaken up the habits of customers and the boss.

For a year and a half, the latter had been trying to sell the building. The City of Quebec had also imposed an easement of non-access to the building. Already in 2021, Sébastien Leblond had raised fears about the withdrawal of parking spaces.

To survive, the latter would have liked a smaller premises, in particular because the lunchtime clientele is no longer there.

The restaurant industry continues to face many challenges.

Rising prices, the labor crisis, inflation and consumer habits are shaking up the entire industry.

At the end of October, a large family from Quebec also announced that it was bowing out from the restaurant business. The Khuong family, owners of the Apsara for more than 46 years, have decided to turn the page on this great adventure.

Hecatomb

Even though he is enjoying his first winter in Cambodia, restaurateur Bun Tean Khuong did not think it would be so difficult to close Apsara, a true institution in Old Quebec for several decades.

Also in Quebec, the Gab’s restaurant-bistro, located for 28 years in the Champigny sector, closed its doors in June 2023.

Elsewhere, on rue J.-B.-Michaud in the Miscéo district of Lévis, the Dorimène refreshment bar and its owner closed its doors on September 9, 2023.

Francine Brousseau, director of the Association des restaurateurs QSP inc, mentioned that Sébastien Leblond, from Maizerets, was not available for a few days.
