Resuming Intimacy After Childbirth: Nurturing Sensual Connection and Overcoming Challenges

Even if it takes place in the best conditions, childbirth remains a test for the women who experience it. A psychological upheaval, in particular during the arrival of the first child, and a sometimes traumatic transformation for the body.

It is therefore necessary first of all to agree on the fact that it is natural for a young mother not to be focused on her libido at first. The internal organs must return to their place and the scars must be able to heal – tear, cesarean section or episiotomy for example – before considering penetration.

Apart from penetration, however, there is no minimum time to resume sexuality if the young mother feels ready. But it’s also natural for her to focus on her baby.

Especially since the production of prolactin, the hormone of breastfeeding, responsible for milk production, and oxytocin, the hormone responsible for the letdown reflex which promotes attachment, tend to reduce libido.

Kindness and patience

Young mothers can also experience a psychological block at the idea of resuming sexuality as before. The fear of pain is particularly common and natural. And it also often happens that the woman does not feel as desirable as before in this new postpartum body.

In order to allow a reassuring and pleasant return to fulfilling sexual relations, the ideal remains to preserve and maintain sensual intimacy with one’s partner. Without penetration at first and without pressure towards an obligatory orgasm.

Massage each other, take the time to cuddle, and rediscover your body alone and with your partner. All this smoothly and in stages. Finally, remember to use lubricant when penetration is again on the agenda. This will reduce the risk of pain.

To note : If you feel the need, do not hesitate to talk about your difficulties with a doctor, a midwife or a therapist.
