Russia withdrew from the Black Sea grain deal in July, raising concerns about global food supplies. Turkish President Erdogan flew to Russia on the 4th to meet with Russian President Putin and said after the meeting that the Black Sea grain agreement is expected to resume soon. Putin reiterated his position that Russia will not return to the agreement unless the West stops restricting Russian agricultural exports to international markets.

Archyde.com reported that Erdogan met Putin in Russia on the 4th, saying that “from Turkey’s position, we believe that we will soon reach a solution that meets expectations”, which is the first time the two have met since 2022.

Erdogan said that Russia’s expectations are well known, that is, to eliminate the shortcomings of all agreements, and Turkey and the United Nations have negotiated a new agreement package to alleviate Russia’s doubts.

He also called on Ukraine to soften its stance on Russia in talks to revive the Black Sea agreement and export more food to Africa rather than Europe. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba later said the country would not change its position, but did take note of Erdogan’s statement after the meeting.

Putin emphasized, “We will be ready to reconsider the possibility of restarting the grain agreement. I have said to Mr. President (Edoğan) again today that as long as the agreement to completely lift the export restrictions on Russian agricultural products, we will Immediately consider restarting the Grain Agreement.”
