CNN previously quoted Russian media reports that five days after the failure of the Wagner Group’s short-lived mutiny in June, Russian President Vladimir Putin called a meeting of senior fighters including its leader Prigozin, and proposed changing the call sign to “grey-haired”. Wagner’s founding executive, retired Russian colonel Andrey Troshev, took over the command organization. Troshev is said to have been involved in Wagner’s operations in Syria, which have been sanctioned by the European Union, the United Kingdom and other parties. He has also participated in the wars in Chechnya and Afghanistan in the past.
After the mutiny, Putin said in an interview with the Russian Business Daily that he offered several options for future actions to the dozens of Wagner members who attended the meeting, including continuing to fight under the command of the immediate commander, the “gray hair”.
