The previous Hanila municipal council allowed the opening of a dolomite quarry in Kurevere, near Virtsu, as a joint venture between Estonia and Finland. Finland’s Nordkalk, Haapsalu KEK (subsidiary company Lihula Libet and Hanila municipality) were to become participants.
Now, the new municipal council canceled the previous promise on the grounds that Estonia and possibly the most species-rich alluvial plain in Europe will probably fall under the quarry. As one of the reasons for the discussion, the mayor of the municipality, Arno Peksar, also mentioned that AS “Kurevere”, which was created to deal with mining, has left the municipality government’s game. „Nordkalk†and KEK have already spent hundreds of thousands of kroons on geological research, and the council’s decision cannot make them happy. A possible trial is being discussed.
