“Revamping Meiser: New Crossroads, Green Spaces, and Cycle Paths for a More Pleasant Commute”

What does the project currently on the table offer? First, as we have said, the removal of the roundabout to create two distinct crossroads: first with the Wahis-Reyers axis, then with the Cambier-Rogier-Plasky axis. In concrete terms, in Meiser, motorized vehicles coming from Schaerbeek via the Chaussée de Louvain will benefit from five traffic lanes: two to go left towards Wahis, two to go right towards Reyers, one to continue towards Evere.

In the other direction, motorists coming from Evere will have three lanes: one to reach avenue Rogier (the connection with avenue Cambier is over), a central lane to continue on chaussée de Louvain, the last to go to avenue Plasky.

In both directions, we must also add the presence of secure cycle paths while today, two-wheelers risk their lives by sharing their lane with Stib buses.

As mentioned in the project concocted by Brussels Mobility with the Stratec, Espaces Mobilités and Transitec design offices, “this new configuration of the intersection allows a significant gain in favor of active modes and a more qualitative space at the entrance to the city“. Clearly: the removal of the roundabout will save around 6,500 square meters of surface area, i.e. 3,500 on the Wahis-Cambier-Rogier side and around 3,000 on the Plasky-Reyers side.

Large spaces for wandering

Ce gain“, add the authors of the project, “offers the possibility of integrating large spaces for wandering, quality green spaces in favor of a reduction in the heat island effect“. Both the open part on the Cambier side and the Plasky side will be laid out on one level, decorated with trees, thus becoming two semi-pedestrianized areas with possible connections for local traffic between Plasky and Reyers and between Wahis and Cambier.

We want more accessible public spaces“, ajoute la ministre Elke Van den Brandt. “We want to green this place, plant several trees, transform this place into a real place rather than a roundabout.

Last element: public transport. Example with tram 25 coming from Reyers which will no longer enter avenue Rogier by crossing diagonally Meiser but by skirting the future placette Cambier. The buses themselves benefit from their own site on the chaussée de Louvain but once on Meiser they will share the lanes with the cars.

Making Meiser more pleasant for all road users is a challenge, which however risks colliding with other major redevelopment projects in the same district. According to the authors of the project, the Meiser project remains compatible with the renovation of boulevard Reyers (Editor’s note: the viaduct was demolished in 2015 already) which has just obtained its planning certificate. The authors of the project also believe that nothing will prevent the arrival of the Mediatram, this new line from the Gare du Nord and which must cross the RTBF site, the Evere commune before joining Woluwe-Saint-Lambert and Cora.
