Jeddah: Seven cubs were born in the endangered Arabian leopard species. The AlUla Royal Commission informed that the birth took place at the Ameer Saud Al Faisal Wildlife Research Center in Twaif. The statement said that this is a success in efforts to restore suitable habitat for wildlife and protect Arabian leopards from extinction. Several cubs have been born at this wildlife research center in the past five months.

With this, the total number of Arabian leopards in the center has increased to 27. In 2020, after the project launched by the Royal Commission to protect this species, their number doubled. The AlUla Royal Commission announces the birth of new cubs every year as the United Nations recognizes February 10 as International Arabian Leopard Day to spread awareness about the importance of protecting it from extinction. The objectives of the fund specially formed for this purpose are also introduced.

The report of the International Union for Conservation of Nature states that there are only 200 Arabian leopards in the world and they are facing a serious threat of extinction. This situation is due to loss of natural habitat and hunting. Following this, the Al-Ula Royal Commission started a project to protect the Arabian leopard and protect it from extinction.

It is also part of achieving the ‘Vision 2030’ goals of revitalizing ecosystems. Al-Ula is considered the authentic home of Arabian leopards throughout history. This is reflected in the depictions of leopards in ancient rock inscriptions in the governorate.
