Revitalizing Municipal Buildings in Hannut: A Sustainable Solution to Energy Consumption

Municipal buildings are often poorly insulated and therefore consume a lot of energy. So when Europe granted subsidies within the framework of the Walloon recovery plan to allow local authorities to renovate their buildings with energy, this aroused a certain enthusiasm with concrete projects like in Hannut.

The budget is important: 118 million euros which are dedicated to energy renovation since we know that the lack of insulation is responsible for 20% of greenhouse gas emissions. We have selected 116 municipalities and the work should be completed by December 31, 2026 “, specifies Christophe Collignon, Minister of Local Authorities.

In Hannut, two million euros in subsidies will arrive to destroy part of the municipal administration and rebuild it. And without this subsidy, the project would not have been possible. ” We have the possibility, through this project, to renovate part of our municipal administration which is relatively old and very energy-intensive. It is therefore a question of demolishing part of the annexes located around Château Mottin, which is the main room of our administration and which will become ceremonial, and to rebuild in place of these annexes a brand new administration, which will also make it possible to bring together different public services. There will therefore be a better reception for the citizen while achieving our objective of reducing our energy consumption by 80%. “, details Manu Douette, mayor of Hannut.

Given the deadline for the end of the work, it remains for Hannut, as often elsewhere also when a file must be put together quickly, to complete a financing which may require the postponement of other projects.
