Revitalizing the Guitar Sound: Damon Albarn’s Perspective and Exciting New Bands

Damon Albarn has spoken of his opinion of “guitar bands”, saying the sound has become “uninspiring” since the Arctic Monkeys’ boom in popularity.

However, the Blur frontman also points out that he thinks there’s renewed excitement for these bands, and praises a handful of artists who he says have “tremendous potential”.

It was on the Broken Record podcast that he explained, “I feel like there’s a little more excitement around the guitar sound, which can’t be a bad thing. because it got so sterile. For me, the last great guitar band was Arctic Monkeys and I don’t really know if there’s been anything that good since.”

“But today there are bands that have enormous potential. Music with powerful guitars has really dissolved and then reconstituted in a different form. There are fantastic new mutations of guitar genius”.

He goes on to praise the guitar bands he thinks are inspiring this new wave: “I really like the Wu-Lu band, they sound really cool. There’s one I discovered somewhere in the American countryside, but I can’t remember his name.”

“Then there are bands like Yard Act that seem to be getting better and better. Obviously they’re not new, but I still see them as emerging bands, like the Sleaford Mods, brilliant. There’s a lot great bands.” “The sound is brought to the lyrics once more, more like in that generic rock shit – I hate that, I like the poets and the guitars.”
