Electric cars are already hitting a glass ceiling: the limit of their batteries. Apart from stacking them on top of each other or slightly optimizing consumption, nothing can revolutionize the thing for the moment. The solution ? Create new routes perfectly suited for this.

E-highways for electric cars

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular. The rates are already more attractive compared to even a few years back and the performance is downright more profitable.

But of course, the owners of this kind of vehicle come up against a terrible problem: the battery is not infinite. Count around 350 to 750 km of autonomy for recent vehicles. Even if we are still waiting for some Chinese vehicles on the market with even more ambitious ranges, for the moment, nothing helps, we have to be content with these limitations. What if I told you that the problem could be solved not by boosting the autonomy of the batteries until more thirsty, but by changing our roads and its technologies?

In April 2022, the E20 motorway in Sweden transformed one of its sections into an “e-motorway” over 20 km. A kind of electrified highway that allows vehicles to charge while driving. Even if the technology is first considered for trucks, this method could well change our vision on our personal electric car driving. In France, it is the A10 motorway near Paris, which undertook a similar project during the summer of 2022.

Soon “magical highways” for France?

Simply put, the technology relies on two methods:

Firstly, magnetic coils in the bitumen make it possible to charge the batteries of vehicles by induction, a bit like platforms for charging smartphones. On the other hand, there is a rail protruding from the bitumen which will allow the vehicles to plug directly into the ground.

Other closed tests should take place from September 2023 in Rouen, under the supervision of the Ministry of Ecological Transition. If the first tests are conclusive, the ministry plans to bring this project on the A10 motorway, the one near Paris, in the direction of Orléans on a section of 4 km. The experiment should last 3 years with a total cost of approximately 26 million euros.

This process should do several things. Already, allow owners of electric cars to save their battery on long journeysbut also to allow manufacturers to reduce the autonomy of vehicles to make the batteries smaller, therefore to make cheaper and lighter models.

This progress could well be significant, as much from a point of view of the democratization of electric vehicles, but also from an ecological point of view. If everything works like clockwork, we could even say goodbye to gas stations in a few years.
