Vienna – Austria needs to get its spending under control. The EU has already demanded this from the Republic. The word “austerity package” is in the room. But many politicians don’t want to call it that. What is clear, however, is that Austria will have to save money, cut its spending or generate new taxes because the EU fiscal rules are being violated. Starting next year, Austria will have to save around three billion euros annually. If Austria misses its climate targets, around five billion euros will be due in 2030 to buy CO2 certificates. This puts a strain on the state budget and limits scope.
