AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Richmond County Board of Education is progressing toward selecting a new superintendent. The process has not been without its challenges, as expressed by board members.
Last Thursday, Monique Braswell held a press conference prior to the special Board of Education meeting. She voiced concerns and frustrations regarding the superintendent selection process.
“As a parent,it’s distressing that we’ve reached this point without a resolution. As a board member, it’s simply not acceptable,” stated Monique Braswell, who serves on the Richmond county Board of Education.
On Monday, after a 90-minute executive session, the board reduced the applicant pool from 35 to six. The board may select one to three finalists for further consideration.
“It’s definitely a process, and we’re taking our time and taking responsibility seriously,” said Shawnda Stovall, Richmond County BOE President.
Board members emphasized their commitment to finding the ideal candidate. They aim to elevate the school district to become one of the best in Georgia, prioritizing the needs of students, faculty, and staff.
“We want to make sure that our students get the best representation and that we end up getting the best teachers and end up getting the best administrative worker. We end up getting something as simple as our bus drivers, who are ultimately crucial to our school nutrition workers. That all matters when choosing a superintendent,” said Stovall.
The list of applicants will remain confidential until the finalists formally accept their nominations. The board assures the community that feedback from recent surveys was carefully considered.
“We want them to be able to come in to have their interview to be themselves and without any interference. We asked our public what do you want in a superintendent, and we took that into consideration when we name our priorities. If we name someone still in their current job, they could be fired,” said Stovall.
Dr. Malinda Cobb will continue serving as the interim superintendent during the search.
