The 26-year-old came off the road towards the finish line and fell into a ravine.

“Mäder was unresponsive, was revived on the spot and then transported by helicopter to the Chur hospital,” his team told Bahrain Victorious.

The race doctor was quickly at the scene of the accident and immediately provided help, the message said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Gino,” the team wrote.

Fourth day, third change of leadership: Ayuso slips into the yellow jersey

UPDATE 28/04/2023 AT 3:49 PM

Magnus Sheffield (21) from the Ineos Grenadiers team fell in the same place, but the American got off lightly (bruise and concussion).

Skjelmose recovers yellow from Gall

The yellow jersey of the overall leader was taken back by the Dane Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) from the Austrian Felix Gall (AG2R Citroën Team). The Tübingen professional Marius Mayrhofer (Team DSM) had to give up the race.

Even before the first big climb of the hardest stage, a group of 30 around the Belgian Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) tried to escape to the front and temporarily gained a lead of three and a half minutes.

In the peloton, Gall’s Team AG2R kept up the pace to keep their man in the lead. Ayuso had the strongest legs at the Albula Pass. Around 15 kilometers from the finish, the Spaniard attacked from the group of favorites and pulled away irresistibly. “It was a difficult day, there was a lot of climbing to be done, also at high altitudes. Ultimately, however, I felt better and better the faster it got,” said the winner in the finish interview. Ayuso didn’t do much together on Wednesday, but the UAE pro left all his competitors standing on the king’s stage. The 20-year-old then showed downhill qualities on the way to the finish line and secured victory on the day.

Alone in the field: Ayuso is rewarded for a splendid solo ride

“Sometimes it’s hard to explain. The body is the body. Yesterday I had no legs. I suffered. Today I felt better,” said the 20-year-old top talent. At the beginning of the season, his body had let him down. As a result of knee problems, the Tour de Suisse is only his second season. Ayuso also made his debut in Switzerland. At the Tour de Romandie he won the time trial and also wore the yellow jersey. “It’s nice that I was able to win a stage. Now I’m trying to get the overall ranking too. It will be difficult, but it’s possible,” said Ayuso.

Evenepoel drops again – all hope is on the time trial

The final time trial will be decisive for this, in which Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick-Step) is likely to be his toughest opponent. “Remco isn’t far behind and we all know how strong he is in time trials. Mattias is also a strong athlete on time trials. And you don’t know about Felix. He’s never shown it but he’s in great shape. It will definitely be close on Sunday and there are still a few stages to go before then,” he said.

Like the day before, Evenepoel had problems on the mountain in the final. He fell behind at the Albula Pass and crossed the mountain classification with visual contact with the yellow jersey. However, the Belgian was unable to make up for the deficit on the descent. Instead, he lost 26 seconds to most of the favorites.

Maximilian Schachmann (Bora – hansgrohe) was the last German to fall behind with 18 kilometers to go. He crossed the finish line in 22nd place, but maintained 16th place in the rankings. His teammate Cian Uijtdebroeks fared better, crossing the finish line in 12th place, one second after Evenepoel had finished tenth, 1:21 minutes behind. The Belgian, who was also only 20 years old, dropped from eighth to ninth place in the overall standings. His teammate Sergio Higuita presented himself in improved form. The Raublinger’s third strong climber showed an appealing performance in the group of the day.

In addition to the yellow, Skjelmose also regained the white jersey of the best young professional. First in the points classification remains Wout van Aert (Jumbo – Visma), who, like the new mountain king Pascal Eenkhoorn (Lotto – Dstny), was part of the group of the day.

The longest stage awaits the field of riders on Friday. After another crossing over the Albula Pass, this time from the opposite side, it’s a total of 215.3 kilometers to Oberwil-Lieli. The constant ups and downs in the last quarter of the race could lead to breakaway attempts again.
