Employees of the Quanta plant in Shanghai, China, where Apple’s MacBooks are assembled, began rioting. This was reported by TIME, citing an informant familiar with the situation.
The reason for the dissatisfaction of the workers was the restrictions imposed by the management in connection with the ongoing lockdown in the city. Quanta employees cannot leave the factory for about two months and live at the local campus.
The first production riot happened in early May. At the time, hundreds of workers tried to force their way past guards out of concern that they would run out of food and hygiene supplies if the lockdown was not lifted soon. The second incident of unrest occurred in mid-May. Workers rioted outside the managers’ dormitory due to low wages and ongoing restrictions. Representatives for Quanta and Apple declined to comment on the situation.
