The British Broadcasting Company BBC reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed that it was attacking Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, but no further information was provided at this time. Lebanese media reported that Israeli airstrikes hit two villages in southern Lebanon early Thursday morning. Hezbollah said it attacked Israeli military posts along the border between Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday. Hezbollah and Hamas are designated as terrorist organizations by the United Kingdom and the United States.

Backed by Iran, Hezbollah has a strong military and political presence in Lebanon and wields considerable power. Iran’s foreign minister called on members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to impose an oil embargo and other sanctions on Israel and expel all Israeli ambassadors.

CNN reported that as anger rose in the Middle East, U.S. Secretary of State Blinken sent a State Department cable ordering diplomatic and security officials to convene the embassy security committees to conduct an emergency review of security to determine whether security needs to be strengthened. Over the past week, the U.S. State Department raised its travel advisory for Israel and Lebanon to the highest level, warning Americans not to travel to these countries, while law enforcement agencies across the United States were on high alert.
