Rising Coffee Prices in Morocco: Impact on Consumers and Businesses

Coffee lovers in Morocco will have to put their hands in their pockets this summer. The country’s industrial roasters have decided to raise the price of coffee by 10 to 15% from August 1, in response to soaring world prices for the product.

Coffee is one of the most traded commodities in the world, with an annual production of around 170 million 60 kg bags. According to the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the composite indicator price for coffee, which reflects the weighted average of the prices of the four coffee groups (Brazilian and other naturals, Colombian mild, other mild and robustas), reached 183.19 US cents per pound in November 2022, a 40% increase compared to November 2021.

This surge in prices is explained by a limited supply, affected by unfavorable climatic conditions in the main producing countries, such as droughts, floods and other agricultural problems. Production costs also increased, due to increased labor costs.

In Morocco, consumers mainly drink Robusta coffee, which now costs $2,756 per ton. The distributor of “Mécafé” and “Kimbo” has already announced that it will charge an additional 10 dirhams per kilogram from August 1st. The other brands will follow soon.

This price increase is likely to weigh on the budget of Moroccan households, which consume an average of 3 kg of coffee per year and per person. Catering professionals are also concerned that they will not be able to fully pass on additional costs to customers due to growing competition from mobile cafes.
