Rising Hit-and-Runs: The Impact on Road Safety and Victims in Belgium

A lady in her seventies was fatally hit by a car yesterday in Kain, near Tournai. The driver fled. This behavior is on the rise. There are on average 12 hit-and-runs per day.

In Wallonia, more than 1,000 accidents per year are followed by a hit-and-run (4,500 in Belgium), according to figures from the Walloon Road Safety Agency (ASWR).

Still in Wallonia, 1 accident in 10 is followed by a hit-and-run on average. Pedestrians, cyclists and moped riders are most often victims of a hit and run. Accidents involving a pedestrian are proportionally twice as often followed by a hit-and-run (21% versus 10%).

Hit-and-runs also have consequences for road safety, points out the ASWR. They delay the arrival of emergency services at the scene of the accident, which can reduce the victim’s chances of survival and/or worsen the after-effects of the accident.

The hit-and-run can also have psychological consequences on the victim and complicate (and slow down) the steps to be taken after the accident, particularly in terms of compensation.

Hit-and-runs occur more in the Brussels-Capital Region than in Flanders and Wallonia. This does not mean, however, that hit-and-run is a solely urban phenomenon. Hit-and-runs also occur in more rural areas.
