Since the end of July, the incidence rate has tended to rise in certain regions of France. The appearance of a sub-variant, named “Eris”, and the increase in consultations for symptoms linked to the virus force the authorities to be vigilant, even the Ministry of Health wants to be reassuring.

Is France preparing for a new wave of covid? No to hearing the authorities, while calling for respect for barrier gestures. Thus the region of New Aquitaine seems to be one of the epicenters of this resumption of contamination. Arcachon hospital thus resumed the health protocol during the crisis, with compulsory mask and very supervised visits for patients. Questioned by the Sud-Ouest newspaper, the establishment wants to anticipate a crowd in the emergency room during this holiday period, while noting a resumption of the epidemic among its staff.

In addition to the movement of holidaymakers, large summer gatherings can also promote a resumption of contamination. Thus, the Bayonne celebrations, which brings together nearly a million people, increased the test positivity rate from 20% to more than 35% in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department.

A sub-variant of Omicron makes its debut

Detected last February in Asia, the Eris sub-variant is not considered dangerous by the WHO, but it remains to be monitored. While it represented only 15% of cases on July 10, its share rose to 26% on July 17, according to data from a Public Health France survey. Figures to be handled with care, because the drastic drop in the number of tests carried out does not necessarily give a precise idea of the variants in circulation.

“We need to remain vigilant, as the situation is changing rapidly. We will have, for several more seasons, to live with the resurgence of this virus” the Minister of Health, Aurélien Rousseau
