The income of the younger generation has improved significantly! ? A survey found that the median entry-level income of the latest generation, that is, college students aged 20 to 24, has risen to 17,424 yuan, which is equivalent to the level in 1997. This is a significant improvement over the past four generations. The starting income reached NT$31,945, the highest in history. However, the organization responsible for the survey pointed out that the macro economy continues to deteriorate and the expected improvement in income may not be sustainable.

The New Youth Forum analyzed the income data of people with university degrees in the General Household Survey from 1987 to 2022, and divided it into generations every 5 years, that is, the first generation was born in 63 to 67 years (currently 55 to 59 years old); to the latest generation They were born between 1998 and 2002 (about 20 to 24 years old).

The organization pointed out that in order to facilitate comparison of income in different years, all income figures in the research report are adjusted by the Composite Consumer Price Index (inflation) of the Census and Statistics Department. Data show that the youngest generation’s initial employment income has rebounded significantly, with the median income rising from 14,330 yuan (1987) for the first generation of college-educated workers to 17,543 yuan (1992) for the second generation, and then continued to decline to The seventh generation rebounded slightly, and the eighth generation even rebounded to 17,424 yuan (2022), closer to the historical high.

The study found that only 7.2% of the first generation had a college degree when they were 25 to 29 years old, and the proportion of the seventh generation rose to 56.2%, indicating that the educational level of the younger generation continues to rise to a new high. However, the growth rate of high-skilled labor has slowed rapidly in the past decade, and the number of college-educated workers in low-skilled positions has also continued to increase, from 56,600 in 2002 to 169,900 in 2022, and the proportion has increased from 11.1%. 15.7%. Among them, as many as 16.8% of college student workers were engaged in low-skilled positions in 2018, which was a record high. Although it dropped to 14.8% in 2020, the proportion will rise again in 2021 and 2022.

Research also shows that if we compare the overall labor income with the income of college-educated workers during the same period, the wages of college-educated workers not only did not rise with the overall increase, but actually fell. For example, the overall median labor income increased from 16,272 yuan in 2002 to 20,329 yuan in 2022, an increase of 24.9%. The overall median income of college-educated workers dropped from 36,982 yuan in 2002 to 34,849 yuan in 2022, a decrease of 5.8%.

The organization calls on the government to support further education and the development of new economy to ensure the income of young people

Deng Yongjun, convener of the New Youth Forum, pointed out that different statistics in the past few years have shown that a considerable number of highly educated professionals have immigrated to Western countries, and relevant industries have hired people with high salaries to fill the vacancies. However, the global macroeconomic environment is not good and inflation continues, which has a negative impact on the economy. We are still cautiously optimistic about whether the income level of college students can be sustained in the future. The group recommends that the government closely monitor the labor market, increase efforts to support young people in continuing their studies, and actively explore new economic developments such as innovation and technology to ensure income.
