Risk of Building Collapse in Mons Pedestrian Area: Updates and Precautions

2023-07-27 18:37:00

The pedestrian area of Mons is to be avoided this Thursday evening and for good reason. A risk of collapse appeared in a building located near the Passage du Centre. Part of the pedestrian area was therefore cordoned off for the evening. A company will be on site tomorrow to take stock of the situation and reassess the risks.

At the time of writing these lines, it is impossible to determine whether the Mons pedestrian area will once more be fully accessible tomorrow. “A risk of collapse has appeared in one of the buildings on the Grand-Rue, near the Passage du Centre. The perimeter up to the JD Sports store has been sealed off until further notice. No one had to be evacuated since the buildings are not inhabited”, indicates the City of Mons. “A company will be on site tomorrow morning. We will know more regarding the arrangements to be made at that time.”

Concretely, the cordoned perimeter extends from JD Sports to the passage of the Center. A handful of shops are included in this zone and therefore inaccessible. It is also obviously impossible to cross the pedestrian area to reach the Grand-Place.
