Risks of depression increased with certain hormonal IUDs

While using IUDs can be convenient for many women, one study has revealed one concerning side effect.

When it comes to contraception, women have several treatments at their disposal. They can choose to use the pill, to have an implant placed or even to use an IUD. Nevertheless, birth control can cause many side effects.

Indeed, the most used (the pill) is a hormonal contraception. So she can have an influence on weight gain, mood as well as health users. In fact, many women want to turn to less dangerous alternatives. Researchers are doing the same by trying to develop contraception without hormones.

But a new study may well call into question the use of another method of contraception. In effect, a French study conducted by Epi-Phare on hormonal IUDs reveals an increased risk of side effects. Among other things, the women concerned suffer more from sleep disturbances but above all of depression.

Effects observed after only 2 years

To reach these conclusions, the researchers analyzed health insurance reimbursement data. It appears that in patients using IUDs, antidepressant treatments were more frequent. Moreover, these same treatments could be prescribed within 2 years following the installation of the device.

However, not all IUDs are affected by this observation. According to the researchers, two models in particular stand out: the Mirena and the Donasert. These two IUDs have the particularity of containing significant levels of levonorgestrel. If this progestogen can block ovulation, it also has a strong influence on morale.

However, the study also specifies that the risks of depression are higher in women using these IUDs. He concern about 4% of women according to the figures shared by the researchers.

A known side effect indicated in the instructions for these IUDs

If the study reminds us that this effect should not be underestimated, it is already known to manufacturers marketing these IUDs. Indeed, it is possible to read on the leaflet of these products that they can generate mood disorders. However, the researchers want to be reassuring.

It is not because these hormonal IUDs increase the risk of depression that they are harmful to your health. Several criteria must be taken into account, in particular the sensitivity of each woman to other methods of contraception. Fact, it is not necessary to remove it if you are concerned.

Nevertheless, it is important to inform the patients before the installation before guiding them in their choice.
