Rival Bluesky benefits from Brazil’s X blockade

Elon Musk’s online platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is blocked in Brazil, making its much smaller rival Bluesky popular. The app’s developers announced over the weekend that they had gained 1 million new users in the past few days. According to media reports, X has about 20 million users in Brazil.

Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes banned X from entering the South American country. He has long accused the department of failing to take decisive action to combat the spread of hate speech and fake news.

The conflict has escalated recently. A judge ordered X to block the accounts of right-wing activists who spread conspiracy theories and misinformation. Musk said the request was illegal and that the online platform failed to comply with the request and failed to pay the fine.

When Musk also missed an ultimatum to appoint legal representation for Brazil, Moraes ordered a block on Friday. Musk mentioned freedom of speech and called judges “evil dictators.”

In recent years, Bluesky and other competing products have become popular with some users who dislike Twitter and X’s rightward trend following its acquisition by Musk in October 2022. The tech billionaire and head of electric car maker Tesla personally espouses the views of the American right, which he spreads to his roughly 190 million followers on X every day.

However, various apps have so far failed to realize the meaning of X. Some have failed. The most popular of the X alternatives is Threads from the Facebook group Meta, which currently has around 200 million monthly active users.
