A popular oral blood clot drug, rivaroxaban, is associated with the highest risk of bleeding compared with other drugs used to treat atrial fibrillation, or blood clots in the veins. Gazeta.ru.

This was shown by a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

If a blood clot or atrial fibrillation is detected, patients may be prescribed anticoagulants, blood thinners, to prevent future clot formation. Atrial fibrillation is a type of heart rhythm disorder that significantly increases the risk of blood clots and stroke. The three most commonly prescribed medications are rivaroxaban (Xarelto), apixaban (Eliquis), and warfarin.

Scientists analyzed data from 100 patients collected within a year after anticoagulant prescription. Rivaroxaban resulted in nearly forty bleeding events, and warfarin and apixaban resulted in 25 cases. Warfarin has been associated with more serious bleeding.

The incidence of blood clots was higher with apixaban compared with warfarin. The lowest risk of death was observed with apixaban, but the findings require re-examination in larger studies.
