In the 10 months that have passed this year, 6,965 accidents occurred on the roads in Cuba. This figure constitutes an increase of 12.8%, compared to the same stage in 2022. Last Wednesday, November 1, a report was presented with data on this topic. In these unfortunate events, 562 citizens lost their lives and 5,643 were injured.

However, these values are below the deaths and injuries of the previous year, with 0.7% and 8.6%. The Director of Traffic of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), Colonel Roberto Rodríguez, addressed the reasons for the events on Cuban roads. This police chief added that collisions between means of transportation caused the highest number of deaths.

The causes of accidents

Rodríguez explained that the drivers involved in the accidents were driving at extreme speeds or driving distracted. Other causes that the colonel mentioned were non-compliance with traffic priority and defects in vehicles. These violations were reported by 68% of the deceased.

Added to this information are the indiscipline of pedestrians and electric or fuel-powered motorcycles, which contributed to 58% of the fatalities. Vehicle teams that incorrectly tried to overtake others accounted for 31% of the deaths.

Roberto Rodríguez also pointed out that the deaths were consequences of not using helmets or protective belts. The officer did not talk about some aspects that cause tragic events on the Caribbean island, such as the poor condition of the streets and cars.

During the summer of 2023, more than 1,000 accidents were reported with 72 deaths and 543 physically affected. From January to May, 3,620 cases were recorded on the streets of the largest of the Antilles. In this period, 290 people died and 2,807 suffered body injuries.
