Roanne Choir 2023-24 Season Preview: Antoine Diot and the Quest for French Basketball Supremacy

2023-09-12 09:05:00

A few weeks before the resumption of the French Basketball Championship, TrashTalk takes an overview of the 18 teams who will compete during the 2023-24 season. On the daily menu? The Roanne Choir, without Clément Mathieu but with Antoine Diot and Jean-Denys Choulet. Preview? Preview!

Roanne, stronghold of French basketball. Yes, even if in the heights of 42 the Internet connection is not always there. From the championship title in 59 to that of 2007 with the fantastic Salyers and Spencer or the very young Pellin, through the Alain Gilles years, the Choir and the championship have built a solid relationship. Back in the elite since 2019 with a duo who had proven themselves over the previous decade (Brochot in the office, Choulet on the bench), the Roannais now want to establish themselves permanently at the highest level.

Last season’s results:

France championship : eleventh, with 15 victories and 19 defeats
Coupe de France: defeat in the round of 16 against ASVEL (89-88)

Departures :

Ronald March (Prometey) Stefan Moody (BC Igokea) Kyle Foster (Oldenburg) Silvio De Sousa (Aris Salonika) Isaiah Ross (Trepca) JaKeenan Grant (Be’er Sheva) Arthur Bruyas (Pau) Henri Drell Renathan

Arrivals :

Kellan Grady (Grand Rapids Gold, G League)
Antoine Diot (ASVEL)
Lewis Sullivan (Split)
Cyril Langevine (Vérone)
Tavian Dunn-Martin (Sentjur)
Jordan Tucker (Chernomorets Burgas)
Anthony Tsegakele (Canada)
E.J. Anosike (Texas, G League)

Current workforce:

Leaders: Tavian Dunn-Martin, Antoine Diot and Alexandre Bouzidi Back: Kellan Grady and Anthony Tsegakele (freelancer) Wingers: Jordan Tucker, Kadri Moendadze and Maxime Roos (injured) Power Forwards: Lewis Sullivan and EJ Anosike Pivots: Yannis Morin and Cyril Langevine Coach: Jean-Denys Choulet

Lots of movement this summer not far from Charlieu. Among the arrivals? Those of the leader Dunn-Martin and, above all, the almost local of the stage Antoine Diot to supervise the young Bouzidi in the lead. Maxime Roos is the unlucky type and never ends with the sores so JDC and his staff have as a second job “spotting replacements”, which led to the arrival in the wings of Anthony Tsegakele, while position 5 will be made up of two potentially complementary profiles with the great Yannis Morin and the beast Cyril Langevine, seen in Swedish, Polish or Italian games in recent years. A group of which coach Choulet says in any case the greatest good, it even seems that these gentlemen would ask for barbecue specials, if that is not proof of a group which lives well…

The player to watch: Antoine Diot

Of course, he is no longer 20 years old. He actually has more than 30. But undoubtedly, the contribution of Bressan Antoine Diot will be one of the keys to the Roanne season. Contribution on the field, we always talk about one of the best JFL in his position, but contribution in the locker room, the guy is European champion never forget it, and contribution in the kitchen because he is the only one in the Roanne squad can give you the address of the Bresse Bleu factory and the recipe for chicken with morels. More seriously, at 35 in January Antoine is probably offering himself one of his (his?) last professional challenges after a mixed stint at ASVEL, he who also wore the JL jerseys (among the very young) , INSEP, Le Mans, Paris and Strasbourg as well as Valencia in Spain. Real relay to come for JDC, real mentor for Bouzidi, Vacheresse should appreciate it!
