Signing up with the Blaugranas until June 2026, the player who will turn 34 on August 21 offers himself a new challenge after spending 8 seasons in Bavaria. Author of 344 goals and 72 offerings in 375 matches under the Bavarian tunic, Robert Lewandowski spoke to Bild on his end of adventure with the Rekordmeister and not without emotion.
“It was the hardest decision of my life”
“There was no time for a proper farewell. Everything had to happen very quickly and spontaneously. I said, ‘Guys, thank you very much. It will all be over today. We wrote history together, I’ll never forget it!’”, he explained on his sudden departure from Bayern Munich. A sudden departure and an agitated transfer window that Robert Lewandowski did not overcome very well: “The last few weeks have been difficult. It’s not easy for me to find the right words. There’s a lot going on in my head right now. Lately, I’ve been trying to stay relaxed, to enjoy the holidays with my family.” Now fully focused on FC Barcelona, he will discover a new championship after Poland and Germany and a new way of life.
“I wanted to play in a league other than the Bundesliga, I had made that decision a long time ago. But I must point out that it was the most difficult decision of my life. I wanted to live somewhere else, discover something new with my family. My daughter Klara will start school next year, we had to make this decision. If not now, it probably would never have been possible. This opportunity is once in a lifetime.”, he continued. Seizing the opportunity to give new impetus to his career, Robert Lewandowski then spoke about his ambitions with the Catalans.
A transfer that suits everyone
He spoke in particular of his meeting in Ibiza with Xavi who convinced him in his decision: “It was actually by chance. But we immediately had a good chemistry, he said to me: “I will wait for you”. Xavi told me that we would work well together and that we could accomplish a lot. He has a clear plan to bring Barcelona back to the top. Barcelona had problems last season. But the club has incredible potential and has made good transfers now. I think the club is on the right track. My objective is very clear to reach the heights with Barça and win trophies.
Despite many tensions in the transfer of Robert Lewandowski, the latter is satisfied with the outcome of the case with his transfer to Catalonia and a nice sum collected by the German team. The 2020 Champions League winner insisted that the various parties are now satisfied: “Like I said, both sides did things that weren’t necessary. But maybe some things had to happen for the transfer to be possible in the end. I think both parties are happy now. Bayern have a lot of money and I can go to Barcelona. It’s been a long and hard road, but I think in the end we can all look each other in the eye.”
