Robert Powell, the actor who almost died playing Jesus on the cross
The British actor, famous for his participation in the miniseries Jesus of Nazareth when he was 33 years old, is now 79 years old and remembers some curious details from the recording.
In a note published by the Daily Mail newspaper, the actor says that director Franco Zeffirelli was a genius and became the godfather of his children.
In the crucifixion scene he almost died, says Powell, who says that someone let go of the rope while he was climbing the 40-kilogram steel cross.
Fortunately, a cameraman caught him before he could fall about four meters with that weight tied to his neck.
This was during the recording of Jesus of Nazareth, the first episode of which was broadcast in March 1977.
The series deals with the story of Jesus during the years he was on Earth, as well as his death and resurrection according to the gospels.
One of Powell’s demands in the miniseries was to “not blink.”
The film received two Emmy Award nominations, for Best TV Movie and Best Supporting Actor. He also had five BAFTA nominations, including Best TV Actor for Roberto Powell.
Because of this miniseries too, the actor was forced to get married. When it was announced that he would incarnate Jesus, it was commented that he “lived in sin with his girlfriend.” He then married Barbara Lord, his current wife.
Robert Powell is known for this miniseries, but he also participated in A Job in Italy, Beyond Good and Evil, The Four Feathers, Tommy Frankenstein y The thirty-nine steps by Albert Hitchcock, among others.
