Robotic surgery stands out in orthopedics as an innovation, especially for the placement of prostheses. It is a promising option for patients with knee and hip joint problems, including those with osteoarthritis, a common condition of degeneration of the knee joints that causes intense pain and limited movement, affecting quality of life.
This is a very prevalent disease in the world population. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that 80% of people over 65 years of age are affected by the disease. In Brazil, according to the Ministry of Health, there are 15 million people.
Knee replacement surgery is often necessary to alleviate symptoms and restore mobility in patients with osteoarthritis. Traditionally, these surgeries were performed using manual techniques and guides, which require great experience and familiarity with the instruments on the part of surgeons in order to place the prosthesis in the correct position.

“The arrival of robotic surgery has brought a great evolution in this field, offering greater precision in the positioning of the prosthesis and consequently improving short and long-term results for patients with osteoarthritis treated with knee arthroplasty surgery (knee prosthesis) with the assistance of a robotic arm”, explains Dr. Guilherme Gracitelli, orthopedist and knee surgeon at Hospital São Luiz Itaim.
According to the specialist, robotic surgery in orthopedics is also an important ally in more complex cases that require a knee prosthesis, such as major deformities, patients with previous surgeries and fractures of the limb to be operated on.

“This means that the doctor has a greater understanding of the patient’s previous anatomy and the prosthesis can be placed more precisely”, highlights Dr. Guilherme Gracitelli.
3. Faster Recovery: With robotic surgery, the loosening of ligaments and balancing required in surgery is minimized and patients with osteoarthritis generally have a faster recovery and less postoperative pain.
4. Good long-term results: The benefits of robotic surgery extend over time, as patients with osteoarthritis tend to experience good durability of the prostheses and a significant improvement in quality of life.
The relatively new technique requires infrastructure and qualified staff to operate the robot. To perform this type of surgery, the doctor needs to be certified by the robot manufacturers, undergoing theoretical and practical training, until he is qualified to use this technology on patients.
