Marie Georgarakis, Head of Technology and Production Management at On, highlights the streamlined process. “We can directly produce the shoe’s shape, bypassing the traditional steps of textile creation, cutting, and sewing.”

However, complete shoe creation isn’t yet localized. The sole and foot components still originate from Asia. In 2024, On Running recorded sales of CHF 2.2 billion, with most shoes sourced from Vietnam, a low-wage manufacturing hub.

The new shoe, priced at 380 francs, features an upper section resembling a durable sock. It is indeed designed for serious runners, rather than the average consumer, and might potentially be tough to put on.

The immediate challenge for On Running is scaling up production while minimizing defects.Coppetti admits that the current defect rate, ranging from 10% to 20%, is too high. Such rates are not uncommon in early-stage industrial production.
