In the middle of the 8 p.m. news, a live broadcast of the Italian television station Rai from Israel was interrupted by a new rocket attack from the Palestinian organization Hamas.

The broadcast abruptly stopped on Tuesday evening as reporter Matteo Alviti was reporting on the ongoing attacks from the city of Ashkelon near the Gaza Strip. A few minutes later, the journalist called headquarters by phone and gave the all-clear. The entire team was uninjured and doing well.

Alviti, his cameraman and a producer narrowly escaped a rocket attack in Ashkelon that followingnoon. Near their hotel, the team’s rental car was badly damaged by rocket fragments shortly following the three exited the vehicle. “Ten seconds later and I would have been dead,” said the reporter. The rockets were fired by Hamas from the Gaza Strip, as they had been for days. Another car near the hotel was completely destroyed, according to the Rai report. Many foreign TV channels have sent special correspondents to Israel since the new attacks began over the weekend.
