In the 6:7 (3), 2:6 defeat, the Lower Austrian (ATP 118), along with the German local hero Alexander Zverev (ATP 5), also suffered the unstable weather. Because Rodionov found the only break chances in the first set until the break at 4:5 in the first set (due to hail), but missed a 0:40 setback at 2:2 as well as a fourth opportunity. After the lost tiebreak and another rain break, things went in the other direction.

“I performed well in the first set, but then made some unforced errors in the tiebreak that led to me losing the set. With a 1-0 I was able to take the lead straight away in the second set when there was a second rain break,” said Rodionov on his official Facebook fan page. “After that I couldn’t get back into the game 100 percent, which was my downfall when faced with such an opponent. What I’m taking with me, however, is that I can absolutely keep up with the top five players in terms of play. There is room for improvement in other points, but I’m continuing to work on that.” Despite the elimination against the Munich champion from 2017 and 2018, after over 100 minutes of resistance on the court, Rodionov was able to win 10,165 euros in prize money and 25 ATP points for his achieve opening success. He will thus improve a few positions in the world rankings.
