The details were still being eagerly discussed behind the scenes. Then a little “Christmas miracle” happened. The Romanian Interior Ministry announced on Wednesday that it had reached a political agreement on December 23 with the interior ministries of Austria and Bulgaria to join the Schengen area. Accordingly, Schengen controls will no longer apply at the air and sea borders from March 2024. Passengers who want to fly from Bucharest to Vienna or vice versa no longer have to go through passport controls. The Black Sea port in Constanța will also become more important as a result of the agreement because some controls will no longer apply.
