“Romania Postpones Victory Day Celebration: Reclaiming Historical Truth and Recognizing Allied Contributions”

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Chuca has decided to postpone the celebration of Victory Day from May 9 to May 8. He believes that today the celebration has turned into a “propaganda occasion” to support the actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine. Romania in 1941-1944 took part in the war on the side of the Nazi bloc, since 1944 – as part of the anti-Hitler coalition.

“In order to reflect the true symbolism of the surrender of Nazi Germany, I am initiating steps to recognize May 8 as the official date of celebration in Romania, together with our transatlantic partners,” Mr. Chuca said in a statement on the website of the Romanian government.

The Prime Minister of Romania believes that the historical truth has been “distorted”, as the role of other countries in the victory over fascism is ignored. In his opinion, it is necessary to recall such important moments of the war as “the landing in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, Madrid and Rome, Athens and a significant part of Germany, the joint actions of the allied American, British and French troops”, and emphasize the role of the national resistance forces. Mr. Chuca believes that in this way society will pay tribute to all Romanians “who fought for the liberation of their homeland and Eastern Europe from the fascist yoke.”

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced on the eve that he had sent a bill to the Verkhovna Rada on celebrating the Day of Remembrance and victory over Nazism in World War II on May 8. He signed a decree on celebrating May 9 as Europe Day.
