Romanian Army Radars Detect Possible Violation of Airspace during Russian Drone Attack on Ukraine: Defense Ministry Report

Romanian army radars detected a possible violation of the country’s airspace during a nighttime attack by Russian drones once morest civilian infrastructure in neighboring Ukraine, the Defense Ministry announced on Saturday.

Romania, a NATO member, has become vital for Ukraine since the suspension in July of the agreement allowing the export of Ukrainian grain via the Black Sea. Suspected fragments of Russian drones have been discovered on Romanian territory three times this month, highlighting the risks for NATO, whose members owe each other mutual assistance.

“The radar surveillance system of the Romanian army identified a possible unauthorized violation of national airspace, with a signal detected on the route to the city of Galati,” the Defense Ministry said, adding that search teams had been deployed.

“So far, no fallen object has been identified on the national territory. The search continues today,” it was added. Residents of Tulcea and Galati counties were alerted by telephone by authorities as drones heading towards Ukraine were detected near the border.

Officials at NATO and Bucharest said they had no evidence that Russian strikes near the border constituted a deliberate attack on Romania, while calling the strikes reckless and destabilizing.
