It is sometimes complicated to fit all the family’s luggage in a classic trunk without obstructing the driver’s view or affecting passenger comfort. Many Belgians therefore opt for the roof box: an alternative which nevertheless has a price.
One of the best-selling roof boxes worth 400€, a value for money “unbeatable” for a capacity of 400L according to Benoît Abras, purchasing manager of a car store.
In a Brussels brand, an entry-level roof box is sold for €89. “We have a strong demand this year”, underlines Gregory Fabel, the manager. “People want to go on vacation, so they come a lot for everything related to roof racks and roof boxes.”
More high-end models can cost up to 1000€.
Safe rental
It is also possible to rent a roof box, for 12 to 15€ per day, 180 to 240€ per week. This price includes the rental of the bars, the installation of the safe and the instructions for use. A solution which avoids the storage of equipment but which has its limits for Sébastien Danneels, manager of a garage. “For a period of a week it can be advantageous but if you rent a safe for a month and you do this several times a year and you repeat it from year to year, there is no interest .” Understand: you might as well own one directly.
