After a quarter of a century serving the community, Market Fresh, a beloved fruit and vegetable store in Castlerea, is closing its doors.
Councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice, the owner of Market Fresh, announced the closure, which will take place on March 1st. Fitzmaurice cited the increasingly competitive market as a contributing factor too the difficult decision.
“It has become increasingly difficult to survive as a small business in an already overcrowded market,” Fitzmaurice shared.
Despite the challenges, Fitzmaurice expressed deep gratitude for the support received from the community over the years.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to my manny loyal customers and friends for your unwavering support, kindness and loyalty over the last 26 years. You have been the heart of this business and the reason why I enjoyed going to work every day. I certainly will miss the daily chats and interactions with you all in the shop. While it is bittersweet to say goodbye, I look forward to the next chapter in life.”
The closure of Market Fresh highlights the ongoing struggles faced by small businesses, notably in industries with increasing competition. The rise of large supermarket chains and online retailers has put pressure on local shops across the country.
The impact of such closures extends beyond financial losses. They often represent the loss of a community hub where residents can connect with local businesses and foster a sense of neighborhood.
While Market Fresh is closing, Fitzmaurice’s legacy of providing fresh produce and fostering community connections will undoubtedly be remembered.

The Fruits of Labor: A Conversation with Paschal Fitzmaurice
Markets come and go, but the impact they leave behind lingers. Paschal Fitzmaurice, a prominent figure in Castlerea’s local business scene, is preparing to close the doors of his beloved fruit and vegetable store, Market Fresh, after 26 years. We sat down with Fitzmaurice to discuss the ups and downs of running a small business, the changing face of retail, and the void left by the loss of a community hub.
Peak Produce: The Early Days of Market Fresh

Archyde: Paschal, can you share with our readers what inspired you to start Market Fresh all those years ago?
Paschal Fitzmaurice: It was a combination of passion and opportunity. I’ve always had a love for fresh produce, and when the chance to open a shop in Castlerea presented itself, I leaped at it. The community was thriving, and there was a clear need for a local source of fresh fruits and vegetables.Market Fresh was born out of a desire to serve my neighbors and contribute to the local economy.
A Tale of Two Markets: competition and Challenges
Archyde: You mentioned that increasing competition contributed to the decision to close Market Fresh. Can you elaborate on the challenges you faced?
Fitzmaurice: Absolutely. When I started Market Fresh, the market was less crowded. People valued the convenience and personal touch that a local store could offer. Over time, we’ve seen an influx of large supermarket chains and the rise of online retailers. As a small business, it’s arduous to compete with their pricing strategies, extensive product ranges, and e-commerce capabilities.
Fostering Connections: The Heart of Market Fresh
Archyde: Despite thes challenges, Market Fresh remained a beloved part of Castlerea for over two decades. What do you think made your store so special to your customers?
Fitzmaurice: Archyde: Paschal, what advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to open their own businesses in today’s competitive market?
Fitzmaurice: My advice? Stay true to your roots and focus on building a strong community around your business. Authenticity and personal connection will always set you apart. Furthermore, embrace innovation and adaptability. Don’t be afraid to try new things and evolve with the market.
Archyde: Lastly, Paschal, what does the future hold for you?
Fitzmaurice: Archyde: What impact do you think the closure of Market Fresh will have on the Castlerea community?
Fitzmaurice: The loss of a community hub like market fresh is never easy. It’s a sad reality of our time that small businesses, which serve as the lifeblood of many towns, are struggling to survive. We must support them if we want to retain our sense of community. I hope that another entrepreneur will see the potential in Castlerea and take over the reins, creating a new chapter for fresh produce in our town.
