RSO Vienna 2024: New Year’s Concert, Operetta Premiere, and Chamber Music Series

The ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna will ring in the Cultural Capital Year 2024 on January 1st (7:30 p.m.) with a New Year’s concert under the direction of Tobias Wögerer in the Gmunden City Theater. The premiere of the operetta “Candide” will take place on January 17th (7 p.m.) in the Vienna MuseumsQuartier, with eight further performance dates to follow. On January 24th, the ORF RSO Vienna can be heard under chief conductor Marin Alsop at the Musikverein Wien. The next concert in the chamber music series “Up Close” is on the program on January 25th (7:30 p.m.) at the ORF RadioKulturhaus. On January 29th (7:30 p.m.) the orchestra will play in the Vienna Konzerthaus under chief conductor Marin Alsop.

The ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna is ringing in the Capital of Culture year 2024 with a New Year’s concert on January 1st (7:30 p.m.) in the Gmunden City Theater. Under the direction of Tobias Wögerer, the orchestra offers a colorful kaleidoscope of dance music from the 19th and 20th centuries with works by Friedrich Cerha, Balduin Sulzer, Leonard Bernstein, Igor Stravinsky, Germaine Tailleferre and Johann Strauss. Ö1 broadcasts the recording of the dress rehearsal at the same time.

The operetta premiere of Leonard Bernstein’s “Candide” will take place on Monday, January 17th (7 p.m.) at the MusikTheater an der Wien in Hall E in the MuseumsQuartier. The orchestra plays under chief conductor Marin Alsop. Matthew Newlin, Nikola Hillebrand, James Newby, Ben McAteer, Vincent Glander, Helene Schneiderman and Mark Milhofer sing. Production: Lydia Steier. Further performance dates are January 19th, 21st, 23rd, 26th, 28th and February 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The recording of the premiere can be heard on Ö1 on Saturday, January 27th from 7:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, January 24th (7:30 p.m.) the ORF RSO Vienna under chief conductor Marin Alsop will present Leonard Bernstein’s overture to “Candide” and his 2nd symphony “The Age of Anxiety” as well as Dmitrij Shostakovich’s 5th symphony in d- at the Vienna Musikverein. Minor. The soloist is pianist David Fray. Ö1 will broadcast the concert recording on Friday, February 2nd (from 7:30 p.m.).

The next RSO chamber music concert in the “Up Close” series will take place on Thursday, January 25th (7:30 p.m.) in the ORF RadioKulturhaus. The program includes Eugène Ysaye’s Sonata for two solo violins, Sergei Prokofiev’s Sonata in C major for two violins, Georges Bizet’s “Carmen Fantasy”, Grażyna Bacewicz’s Quartet for four violins and Andrew Norman’s “Gran Turismo”. Anaïs Tamisier, Marianna Oczkowska, Jue-Hyang Park, Tudor Florian Păduraru, Manon Stankovski-Hoursiangou, Tongtong Sun, Chika Hayase, and Anton Alexandru Bişoc as well as Goran Kostić on the double bass play on the violin. The next date in the chamber music series will take place on June 17th.

On Monday, January 29th (7:30 p.m.) the ORF RSO Vienna will play under chief conductor Marin Alsop in the Vienna Konzerthaus. Together with soprano Fatma Said, the orchestra presents “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune” by Claude Debussy, “Shéhérazade – Trois Poèmes” by Maurice Ravel and Gustav Mahler’s 4th Symphony in G major. Ö1 will broadcast the concert recording on Sunday, February 11th (from 11:03 a.m.).
